A graduate of the University of South Florida (1987 B.S. in Biology, Cum Laude) Dr. McKalip then attended the University of South Florida’s College of Medicine, receiving his M.D. degree in 1991.
After a general surgery internship at the University of South Florida, he trained in the neurosurgery residency at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill from 1992 to 1998.
He served as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Neurological Surgery
at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF from 1998-2000).
While at UCSF he was the Co-Director of Neurotrauma at San Francisco General Hospital where he was actively involved in clinical neurotrauma research.
